FAQs

  • These are my current beliefs regarding training and nutrition.

Though we are all unique in our experiences and traits, we are also the same species of Homo sapiens. The laws of physics and biochemistry apply to everyone. As such, certain methodologies may be used to get the most out of the time and energy we put into attaining/maintaining physical, emotional and cognitive fitness.

    Fitness

Now that I’m in my 50’s, my outlook on fitness has changed. Every semester, I joke with my students about how I wish to die. It will be because I choose not to pull the rip-cord on my parachute, skydiving on my 103rd birthday, in perfect physical and cognitive health. No suffering, no degeneration. Lofty, I know.

Dr. Peter Attia, who recommends training for the ‘Centenarian Olympics’ has the right approach. Knowing our bodies will fail us in the long-run (musculoskeletal, digestive and cognitive decline), train today in a way that will allow you to do the things others won’t be able to do when you’re in your 90’s. Pick up great-grandchildren, carry groceries up 2 flights of stairs, have sex, etc.

As such, I train my clients/patients in this manner. In the 30+ years as a trainer, I’ve not found anything as effective nor efficient as High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). It’s the mashing together of the weight-training and cardio you’ve been doing. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Training at a higher intensity (above anaerobic threshold for you Ex Phys geeks) gives you aerobic benefits the converse doesn’t.

    Nutrition

I’ve tried them all. Seriously. Before, during and after med school. Every new fad diet coming down the pike, some patient would ask me about and I’d check it out and even follow it for a while. It boils down to this: whatever works.

This is where the ‘everyone’s different’ approach shines. What works for your daughter-in-law may not work for you, no matter how adamantly she swears by it.

You’ll notice, all the better approaches have a few things in common. Ample fresh fruits and vegetables, lean complete proteins, limited processed Franken-foods. Make food quality a priority. Organic, free-range, grass-fed, etc. Yes, they are more expensive. Yes, (in most cases) they are worth it.

I know the name of the guy who grows most of my food. It’s Paul, he’s Amish. I belong to a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) group. There are many. There are pros/cons to becoming a member. For me, it’s a net pro.

I take an evolutionary approach to all of this. If we eat/move the way our ancestors did, we will be more likely to avoid the modern-day pitfalls of over-abundance of poor-quality food and sedentary lifestyles leading to obesity, Type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, etc.

Please don’t think I eschew modern medicine and the advances of science when it comes to emergency care. If I walk outside and get hit by a truck, DON’T take me to a naturopath! I want morphine. STAT! But for the 85% of all chronic disease in our society, modern medicine is woefully inadequate. Prevention is key and I know where the lock is.

And don’t EVEN get me started on sleep and stress…

  • No, I don’t contract with any insurance companies, and I’m not a participating provider in Medicaid or Medicare. This lets me provide the best care possible without the red tape. Many of my patients use pre-tax dollars from a Health Savings Account (HSA) to pay for consultations and/or lab fees.

  • YES! A house call is the best option for many reasons:

    1.  It's most convenient for you

    2.  It allows me the opportunity to see perhaps the most important variable to health - lifestyle

    3.  It's how doctors have treated patients for thousands of years

Fees are assessed based on Time Spent and Distance Travelled to get to you:

    Auto - $0.65/mile + Consultation fee

Air - Airfare + rental car + hotel (if necessary) + Flat fee of $950.00/day

  • While many micro practices are set up for primary care, I am no longer providing primary care services.

My practice is focused on the naturopathic/integrative treatment of stubborn, difficult-to-treat chronic conditions, as well as providing a more complete wellness program that a traditional primary care office just can’t manage.

  • I order comprehensive diagnostic panels through conventional labs like Quest or LabCorp. This could include a full thyroid panel, autoimmune markers, metabolic markers, nutrients, etc.

I also order specialized functional laboratory testing through GI Map, Doctor’s Data, Great Plains, Genova, DUTCH, CYREX, RealTime Labs and others. This includes, but is not limited to, comprehensive stool testing, urine organic acids, nutrient levels, food sensitivity, complete hormones, cortisol (adrenal), heavy metals, genetics, mycotoxins and environmental chemicals.

  • This will largely depend on whether your insurance will cover the costs or not. Your primary care doctor may be able to get some of the labs ordered through their practice. I can help you with the language if you need.

Functional medicine labs are largely cash-pay. Costs are transparent and I will discuss pricing of these labs during your visit, as they will require an investment on your part. Most patients pay an average of $300-$1500 in advanced lab testing at their initial visit.

  • It’s what you get when you mix low overhead with high technology and wrap it around a personal physician-patient relationship. It’s the ideal medical practice; a practice model designed to enhance doctor-patient relationships, increase face-to-face time between doctors and patients, reduce physician workload, instill patients with a sense of responsibility for their health and cut wasted dollars from the entire medical system.

  • The way to do this is for the practice to cut overhead by using low-cost, paperless, state-of-art technology to streamline the administrative work that used to require staff.

I use electronic supplement and lab prescriptions, online scheduling and e-mail to eliminate the need for front-office staff.  You deal with me directly.
